Saga Way
Stations describe Wemding’s history and geology
The Johannisweiher (pond) in Wemding is the recommended starting point for the Saga Way. From here the trail leads to the “Schöne Aussicht” (“Beautiful View”), which lives up to its name. We continue hiking to the Waldsee (lake), where a detour to the limestone quarry is possible. Then proceed through a magnificent mixed forest until suddenly a small forest chapel appears by the wayside. It is said that, at nightfall, the Huaterle, a little man with a wide-brimmed hat, wanders around here. Supposedly, the figure has also been seen as the Doosweiher (pond), where there is also a Suevite quarry ...

- Trail description continued -
Along the way, we encounter another legend, that of the three nuns in white, whose convent is said to have stood nearby. The path continues through forests and along woodland edges, and we soon reach the Hessenbühl with its magnificent view of the Ries. Through hilly terrain, proceed to the pilgrimage basilica, Maria Brünnlein, which invites spiritual reflection. Then, via the Skulpturenweg (Sculpture Trail) lined with fruit trees and through Old Town Wemding, we return to our starting point.
Note: Along the trail, 11 info-panels explain the geology, history and stories in an entertaining as well as scientifically accurate manner.
