Discover geology and history where the shepherds tend their flocks
The Shepherd’s Way is a circular hiking trail that weaves together geological wonders, archeological treasures and historical settlements amidst stunning natural landscapes. Throughout its length, the trail offers both scenic beauty and rich insights into the interplay of nature, geology and human history. The journey begins at the edge of Nördlingen, a unique medieval town surrounded by a fully walkable city wall. Following the traditional shepherds′ paths, hikers encounter info-panels detailing the area’s geology, settlement history and expansive heathlands—the calcareous dry grasslands typical of the Ries-Crater rim that are home to ecosystems teeming with biodiversity.
This 19-kilometer route includes an impressive array of attractions. In addition to five geotopes showcasing the dramatic effects of the meteorite impact, the trail also leads to archeological marvels like the Ofnet Caves and the villa rustica, offering glimpses into Stone-Age and Roman life. Although only the late-Romanesque chapel remains from the Alte Bürg medieval fortress, its location on a forested hilltop invites a visit. Scenic viewpoints like the Riegelberg hill provide breathtaking panoramas of the Ries Crater’s distinctive landscape.
