As a Geopark Ries School, the Elementary and Middle School (GMS) Deiningen aims to teach students about the origin of their local history using educational methods, in order to preserve the heritage of the Geopark Ries for future generations.
From asteroid to Ries Crater

It happened many millions of years ago,
when no humans were yet on the planet,
an asteroid zoomed through space,
faster than its own sound.
It held course for our world,
illuminating the night sky.
The flying projectile, a fireball,
struck with a loud bang.
All plants, animals in the crater destroyed,
rock and earth layers immediately compressed.
Thus a celestial body managed,
to create our unique Ries landscape here.
Meadows, fields, blooming heath,
hills, forests, grass-green pasture,
all this can be found here in the Crater,
we marvel at it on bike tours with father
or on hikes with mom,
this area is simply awesome!
15 million years have passed,
since our beautiful Ries was formed.
On good days you can look from one edge to the other.
For us in Deiningen too, it’s a special piece of land!
The children who go to school here,
are not only smart, but also, they understand
how important the homeland is
and that one never forgets the origin of life.
Therefore is was no surprise for us when it was announced,
that GMS Deiningen received the “Geopark Ries” seal.
We want to protect and preserve our homeland,
learn about our history in class!
A legacy, bequeathed millions of years ago
and today our habitat,
from the blade of grass to the linden tree.
At our school you can grasp geology,
and reach for the stars every day.
