ESA's PANGAEA training prepares astronauts and aerospace engineers to be able to recognize geological details on future missions to the moon, Mars and asteroids.
The training courses take place regularly in the Ries Crater, among other places. Course participants in 2024 were ESA astronaut Rosemary Coogan, ESA member of the astronaut reserve Arnaud Prost and Kanai Norishige from the Japanese space agency JAXA. The theoretical part was followed in 2024 by excursions to the Italian Dolomites, the Ries crater in Germany and the volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote in Spain.
PANGAEA is the first step in preparing European astronauts for missions to other planets, enabling them to communicate effectively with scientific advisors on Earth.
